Globalization has enabled companies to relate with each other by sharing data, that is instrumental for understanding the dynamics of the market. From the study of the financial data published in the websites of the companies, it is possible to project and segment an appropriate strategy of entering into a new market. This ability to extract insight from the financial data is guaranteed by the application of the proper statistical tools such as SAS, and Excel, to analyze extensive data set into a more organized format that can be relied upon by the management. Management analytics is a meaningful career in the present world of data-driven decision-making. I hope to study analytical skills, to be able to analyze and interpret data and apply it to solve business problems, in my anticipated role as a financial analyst.

Management analytics entails understanding the factors influencing managerial decisions, and designing data and analytics solutions to support these decisions. To have these kinds of attributes, one is required to have displayed a strong understanding of working with financial data, either in the academic or working environment. in my undergraduate level specializing in Finance. I covered data related courses such as Math for Financial Analysis, Methods of Matrix Algebra, among others, which instilled in me requisite analytical skills that I need to progress in my career. Also, I did a project where I conducted capital budgeting and risk analysis, an opportunity that enabled me to exercise analytics skills learned in the undergraduate level. To succeed in this area, I think I need not only the data analytical skill but also the sense of management, leadership and communication. University of Toronto – Master of Information – HCDS [~650 words]

I first felt the power of data science and analytics is when I interned as an HR. Traditionally, HR has been taken as a people-driven business, where quantitative assessment matters the most because it is hard to quantify human resource and employee behaviour. Some people even accuse that HR’s work is based on “gut feeling.” I had this misconception as well before entering this position. However, working in this company, I felt the traditional view of human resource is changing, as data science and analytics penetrates every industry. In such a people-driven discipline, companies are applying new technology and assessments to evaluate the company performance, such as how high the annual employee turnover is, how much of the employee turnover consists of regretted loss, who are most likely to leave the company within a year, or the expected performance of the employees. I daunted on me how much data science has penetrated in this industry. Finance, my major, on the other hand, are adopting even faster with data penetration. With the uprising financial technology products, quantitative analysis in the investments, etc., any financial practitioners would be left behind if they choose to neglect the power of data science. I am pursuing a Master of Information because I want to be equipped with analytical skills that facilitate me making better financial decisions.

To succeed in Master of Information, analytic skills is inevitable. from my own understand the exposure that I have had so far, raw data collected from the disparate sources have less meaning, unless it is well analyzed, and interpreted to provide the so needed insight, which is the basis of data science. The organized form of data is the information, which is instrumental for managers who lack skills in dealing with unstructured data. This realization of how important it is to analyze the data was supplemented by my undergraduate level learning of various courses such as Math for Financial Analysis, and Computer Science Fundamentals. These two courses helped me at one end to learn of the computer programming languages such as Java and Python, and on the other end, how I can leverage these to deal with financial data. As Human-Centred Data Science deals with complex, large-scale data sets and information systems, I will leverage the knowledge acquired in the undergraduate level to make an impact in the program. What I aim to learn is how to use the data ethically, to solve the common social problems that people do face in society.

To expand my analytical skills, I did a project in Financial Analysis of Lululemon Athletica. This Canadian company mainly promotes yoga-related apparel, including performance shirts, shorts, pants, and yoga accessories. I assessed the company’s risk by performing risk and return analysis and capital budgeting analysis, which amplified my quantitive skills. Among the data that I extracted from Bloomberg, which improved my research skills included risk-free rate, expected market return, equity risk premium, among others. From this project, I concluded that Lululemon has a relatively lower risk compared to its industry competitors due to the inexistence of debt. In the same vein, I was able to predict the financial performance of the company, based on comprehensive assessment from its operations, management and equity capital status. This experience assisted me to relate the data to real situations, such as estimation of the level of competition. I want to add more knowledge by learning fundamental concepts, theories, practices and different horizons in which data is retrieved and manipulated—the impact such development may have on society.

After completing the masters of information, I anticipate starting my career as a data engineer, finding the trends in data sets and developing algorithms that would aid in making raw data more useful. On gaining enough experience of working with business data, I look forward to becoming a financial analyst. The Co-op option will help me to gain hands-on experience and widen my professional network, hence my choice to join this esteemed program at the University of Toronto.
