After a while, the family decides to get rid of Gregor, a decision that surprises the reader and creates suspense. He witnesses humiliation from family and later dies in a pathetic way. The author states that his death is viewed as the end of trials and tribulations of the family.
On the other hand, Things Fall Apart novel chronicles the main character, Okonkwo. The author explains events that occur in Okonkwo’s youth, his experience in exile and his home return which forms three parts of the novel. In part one, the author emphasizes Okonkwo’s coming of gage the desire to reject his father’s disreputable legacy. Okonkwo secures a place in Umuofia following his local fame and tireless efforts. However, he goes astray after executing a young boy in Umuofia. The author builds a distinguishedreputation to the readers by narrating the struggle Okonkwo goes through.
Part one therefore gives a broad view of the Igbo community in the precolonial world. The author, Achebe thus illustrates Igbo community values, rituals and religious beliefs to help the reader understand the Igbo world. After the execution, the author indicates that Okonkwo was held in exile for seven years. Furthermore, Okonkwo decided to leave his fatherland for a retreat to his mother’s kin. His decision parallels huge changes in both cultural and historical aspects as a result of infiltration of Christian missionaries in the region. In the third part of the novel, Achebe shows Okonkwo’s decision to go back to the fatherland since the large presence of foreigners in the land had brought massive divisions among the locals.
In both novels, the authors summarize stories by describing how the main characters die. Death has been used as a unique symbol which communicates a lot about locals around the characters. In Ending of Metamorphosis, the readers expect Gregor to have a theatrical and honorable death from his family but he is left to die on his own. The author Kafka expresses disappointment from Gregor’s family who neglected and humiliated him after the transformation yet he used to be the family’s provider. Kafka brings up a confusing situation where the ready expects to see Gregor’s family taking care of him and even his body, instead, the family is relieved by his death. Besides, the family members secure jobs and ends up forgetting about Gregor. After his death, the family takes a trip, a decision that shows that they feel better without Gregor.
Similarly, Achebe in his Things Fall Apart indicates the death of Okonkwo after he killed a European messenger. Although he was an active member in his society who fought against colonial oppression, no one in the society recognizes his effort. The author putts the ready in a difficult situation as the ready tries to understand why Okonkwo would be rejected by the community yet he fought for their rights.
