The Main Quadrangle
The main quadrangle
The University of Sydney is an institution that has been in existence for decades. The institution boasts of buildings with impeccable designs. The buildings’ architecture takes one on time travel back in time to when the buildings were constructed. Our Sydney website’s virtual map takes one through buildings and places within the university such as the Anderson Stuart building, Macleay Building, Holme building, R.D Watt, Teachers College, and the Main Quadrangle, mention but a few. One building that stood out to me the most is the Main Quadrangle. This reflects the history, cultural and political significance of the Main Quadrangle and the feeling it evokes within me.
The Main Quadrangle was designed between the years 1854 and 1963 by a colonial architect called Edmund Blacket. The government-sponsored the construction of the building. The Main Quadrangle is a quadrangle formed by the Main Building and a series of other facilities similar to its style, form, and design. The Main Quadrangle sits on two hundred and fifteen acres of land. The building is outstanding because its eye-catching form and design help it serve the purpose for which it was constructed. The construction was declared a botanic garden by the American Public Garden Association in the year 1997. The ambiance makes the place a social space for students in Sydney. The Main Quadrangle is the main socialization point. It offers an environment for outdoor games, quilt study sessions, and a relaxation place. The architecture on the Main Quadrangle is considered Gothic. Blacket’s work is famous for its Victorian-style carved cedar on the interior (Herford 2018). The buildings also have dormer windows with stained glasses on them. The Main Quadrangle represents the sentinels of the University of Sydney. This masterpiece speaks not only of the history of Sydney but also of the adoption of English designs. The area is the afocal point of interaction among the students at the University of Sydney. It has birthed the formation of many social and political alliances within the school (Dean 2018).
The first impression the Main Quadrangle gives is a feeling of freedom and openness. The vast open space with the grass lawns enclosed within buildings of impeccable designs is a sight to behold. The building represents a feeling of continuity and immortality of art as a form of expression. The history the building itself holds about Sydney is important to me. The building contains thousands of memories made by the students who have been through the University of Sydney. The Main Quadrangle gives the students at the University of Sydney a sense of belonging. Space provides a safe place for the students to meet and interact amongst themselves. The Main Quadrangle is a sentimental place due to the relationships it has fostered among the students. The building also gives off a vibe of resilience due to its ability to stand the test of time. Seasons have come and Gone, but the Main Quadrangle still stands tall.
In conclusion, the social, cultural, and political significance of the space enclosed within the Main Building and its surrounding buildings to form the Main Quadrangle cannot be overlooked. The socialization that takes place in that space and the interactions are valuable. The area represents the history of the architecture during the 1850s alongside the student population’s history at the University of Sydney.
