The George Washington University Institute

Harper, J. (2007). Secrets revealed, revelations concealed: A secret city confronts its environmental legacy. The George Washington University Institute for Ethnographic Research, 80(1), 39–64. Retrieved from In 2007, after an air strike from the US in Somalia, President Bush announced a plan to send 21,500 additional troops to Iraq. There was a meltdown in the Chinese stock market that sent shock waves through the world. It created the worst Dow fall since 9/11. Iraq took 15 British soldiers as hostages and later released them. There was a NASA hostage situation that ended in a murder suicide. North Korea agreed to disassemble its nuclear fuel plants, later agreeing to dismantle all of it’s nuclear plants by the end of 2007. Al Gore was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The former Pakistan PM, Benazir Bhutto, returned to Pakistan after 8 years in exile. Brigadier General Paul Tibbets passed way. He was the pilot of the Enola Gay during WWII when the first atomic bomb was used in Hiroshima.

From what I gathered about the time frame this source was written in, it was when Brigadier General Paul Tibbets was becoming ill and then later passed. I believe it would have put more focus into the bombings becoming a topic of debate, especially considering his role. This was also a time that saw North Korea make deals concerning their own nuclear arms race, again putting the focus on the role the United States played in its cold war arms race. I would think that Harper would have been influenced by this and the impact the secret city had and their role in the creation of the atomic bomb and how that rippled out even after the secrecy had ended.
