the four spheres of political action in nursing.

Please discuss the four spheres of political action in nursing. In addition, please develop a brief argument sharing how these spheres are interconnected and overlapping by applying an example from your practice. What are some ethical considerations here?

The Spheres of Political Action in Nursing

Nurses occupy a significant position in society because of the essential services that they offer. Despite viewing themselves as politically powerless, they shape society’s politics in numerous ways. The four spheres of political action within the nursing profession are the workplace, professional organizations, government, and community. Each of the four spheres possesses autonomous functions that override to bring change in a complex system that constitutes the nursing practice (Chaffee, Leavitt, & Mason, 2014, p. 155).

The Workplace

The workplace setting of nurses ranges from hospitals, learning institutions, prisons, clinics, and factories. Irrespective of their workplace, they strictly operate within the set state laws (Park, Hanchett, & Ma, 2018, p. 732). The workplace sphere focuses on the issues that affect nurses’ ability to dispatch their duties and how they relate and care for patients. Nurses work in a sensitive environment. They have the mandate of advocating and deliberating on issues that affect them and the ability to take care of their patients. They must have political insights to ensure that policies and relevant authorities address them adequately for their benefit and patients. Some of the ethical workplace ethical dilemmas that nurses face include sour relationships, which affect their teamwork (Bajwa, Kanwal, Rhalid, & Mubarak, 2016).

The Government

The government plays a crucial role in implementing the policies and laws that govern nurses’ activities (Park, Hanchett, & Ma, 2018, p. 729). All nurses, both in the private or public sectors, have to comply with government regulations as they dispatch their duties. The government is the primary stakeholder of a country’s health sector, and its political actions significantly influence the nursing fraternity. For instance, the government funds the health sector by building medical facilities and responding to disasters requiring medical attention, where nurses are the frontline workers.

The Community

It is a pivotal sphere because it is responsible for addressing issues that toll on community health. The community has better insights into its population’s unique health needs, making it crucial to cooperate with nurses to meet them. Healthcare professionals closely work with the community to understand the general issues and devise relevant mitigation strategies for the arising concerns. The community forms an integral part of the nursing practice because it directly impacts the people’s livelihoods. New healthcare policies require both political leaders and the community to respect any communal reservations when implementing the laws. A successful collaboration between nurses and the community promotes health. Ethical dilemmas within the community arise when a medical director or a nursing home sends patients to his hospital only when facilities can offer better health services (Haahr, Norlyk, Martinsen, & Dreyer, 2020, p. 266).

Professional Organizations

The numerous organizations within the nursing practice work towards a good cause when addressing the issues that impact nurses. They shape policy-making processes in the healthcare sector through contribution and implementation. Organizations become more vital besides opening doors to vast opportunities when they join hands towards a common cause. For example, they can champion equal distribution or sharing of resources to enhance networking and promote a country’s health sector. Divided professional bodies jeopardize the efficiency of the nursing practice.

Interrelation and Overlapping of the Spheres

The four spheres interrelate and overlap because they contribute independently towards realizing a nursing practice’s political action. For example, action programs to control obesity require the nurses to closely collaborate with the community to get insights into the extent of obesity. The government will provide relevant research tools and medical equipment, and political support for the program through healthcare agencies. Simultaneously, the professional organizations compel the government to play its role diligently to see the program to its success. The organizations will take the challenges that nurses face and offer suggestions to the government to improve the situation. The workplace will provide relevant facilities and an environment where nurses will conduct their researches using data from the community and develop mechanisms of dealing with diabetes. The four spheres work closely to build a complete entity that constitutes the health sector.
