The Diary of Anne Frank Review

Task #1

The book that I read encompassed the experiences of a young girl written in a diary on daily accounts. The author of the diary was Anne Frank and the book was later edited by her father, Otto Frank as well as by Mirjam Pressler. Relative to the cover page that entails a photo of Anne Frank below the title of the book depicts a vast message concerning the book. One of the messages derived from the cover page is the contrast of Anne’s life in her own words in the diary fostered by the use of different background colors. The use of different background colors although is a primary attractive element visualizes a different message. It is a message that although Anne’s life is clearly black and white since she is a young girl and hence her experiences are common to other childhood stories, her aspect of giving words and expressions shows the beauty of her experiences.

Task #2

Anne Frank is the main character of the book essentially because she recounts her daily life experiences for two years. The character in the book resembles an innocent young girl but with ideological views concerning life. She is a strong character mainly because of her humorous character in dealing with life issues. A good example is when she confesses that although she is surrounded by a loving family and friends, she feels lonely (Rittner 35). The character demonstrates a judgmental personality with an attitude against particular ideals although in different scenarios she is generous and an adept reader. However, she counters the negative personalities with humorous acts especially as a means of relevance in different situations. One of the situations that she uses ideal humour is in the birthday celebrations. Although her birthday celebrations are postponed mainly because of the German war against Jews, Grandma’s illness and later her death, Anne celebrated her birthday in 1942 with a lit candle for her grandma present to celebrate her well-lived life as well (Schnabel and Erika 94). The character of Anne is basically a strong one with a different worldview concerning life.

Task #3

The Diary of Anne Frank is an enriching recount of a young girl’s life especially in the spectrum of a war-torn society. The author ultimately uses quotes to give character to her relations and definitions. One of the quotes that she uses is the comparison between papers and individuals arguing that papers have more patience (Frank 7). Anne utilizes this quote to demonstrate her diary as her closest friend. She effortlessly states that although she is surrounded by a lot of friends and family, they do not offer the platform for her pure expressions. As a result, she gets lonely in the midst of her friends and hence her resolution to make friends with her diary. It is an important concept in the studies of childhood behavior mainly because the majority of people in the society suffer from loneliness without the knowledge of utilizing such tactics as diaries to make up for the loneliness (Felderer 57). In addition, the quote creates a platform of the diary’s relevance due to the clarity of the nature of the relationship between Anne and her diary.

Task #4

The context of the diary also demonstrates a formidable social justice system interference that happens in times of war. In a statement by one of Anne’s friends, she stipulates that she fears to express her true self as well as exercising her rights mainly because of the oppression the Jewish population was subjected to by the Germans (Frank 8). After the 1940 invasion by the Germans, rules were imposed to the Jewish that restricted their freedoms and rights in associations, movement, expressions as well as in their customary practices. According to Anne and her friends, it was a clear injustice to the Jewish. The emergence of war affects the majority of the marginal communities especially in the determination of their social status against the superior communities. A good example is during the era of Adolf Hitler that the Jews were considered inferior to the Germans. As a result, they were subjected to oppression and massive killings to instil fear and hence the inferiority aspect to the German (Busby and Helen 28). This diary captures the spectral aspect of social injustice system through the worldview of a childhood experience thus fostering its uniqueness.

Task #5

During the Second World War, ethnic crashes rendered a dissociation that people lacked the essence of a society and the dynamics. In one of the entries by Anne in the diary, she records that her father had advised the family to enjoy their seemingly careless life before it was all stripped off by the Germans (Frank 10). Anne depicts the wages of war to human society through her father’s expressions. Although the Germans had only imposed strict regulations upon the Jewish, it was definitive that the oppression was intensifying. As a result, the Jews lost meaning in the living essentially because of the consequences. Otto Frank, the father of Anne argues that since the Germans invaded the region, they have been offering their possessions to other ethnic communities in the bid of adhering to the regulations (Duban 34). The relevance of the statement is the reflection of the consequences of war, especially to the younger generations. Despite the effort of ensuring Anne and her sister attended learning institutions, according to her father a better life meant safer human society with equality as the centric factor.

Task #6

Rough childhood experience renders an alteration from sentimentality to reality. After moving to the secret annex, Anne resolves to face real-life situations instead of being sentimental about living conditions (Frank 16). In an argument with her mother concerning courtesy of ladies, she contrasts to her mother’s philosophy of politeness. Anne postulates that a maid will prevalently be a maid and not a domestic helper because her roles do not change after the war, unlike her mother’s perspective. Her mother’s perspective, on the other hand, regards to a maid changing her name to domestic helper since the war humbles the entire human society (Taylor 78). The main argument between the two lies in the expectations of the war once it ends and their disparity is enhanced by the distinct relationship between sentimentality and reality. While Anne chooses reality over-sentimentality, the mother chooses sentimentality over reality hence the intense debate. The significance of this thematic construct is to establish the core pillars of war. Although war fosters change, the approach determines the impact rendered to the population, a centric argument that Anne aims at establishing.

Task #7

The aggressiveness of Hitler in dealing with the Jewish population highly contributed to their animosity and acts in executing the Jews. Hitler considered German highly superior to Jewish. According to Anne, the Germans have taken away the essence of nationalism among the Jewish (Frank 20). In the early 1940s, Anne lived a terrifying life with news of her friends’ execution especially the saboteurs as well as their families. The Germans were brutal in handling the war and sought to ensure that the Jewish were totally denied their uniform value in all aspects of the culture, religion as well as the social construct. In some instance, the Germans focused on the deportation of the younger generations of the Jewish to foreign countries to reduce the possibilities of the emergence of a revolt against their rule. The theme plays a crucial role in the visualization of the effects of Jewish oppression by the Germans.

Task #8

Family unity shapes the character of an individual during growth and development. According to the author, family interaction is akin to a storm that can kill or enhance some astral beauty (Frank 20). In the secret annex, Anne’s family shared the accommodation with the Van Daan family. Both families although they shared meals and engagements, they always had arguments. As a result, the storms reflected different reactions. The significance of the theme lies in the lesson of the influence of a family. Despite the insecurities from the war, the prominent factor that mattered best was the essential element of a family.

Task #9

The emergence of war among nations leads to global insecurity as well as the loss of lives resembling the onset of human extinction. The First and the Second World War facilitated the extreme marginalization of certain ethnic communities within particular regions. However, these marginalized communities focused on a rebellion that caused the deaths of many people. Anne addresses the effects of the war on foreign nations in a statement that the end times of the human society had begun (Frank 23). The key reason for the depiction was because of the fallout news of Algiers, Oran as well as Casablanca an indication of the increasing global insecurity.

Task #10

The context of the book remarkably changes in relation to the intensity of the war. Anne and her family move from their home to a hiding place mainly because of the increasing German regulations to the Jewish. As a result, the environment of the book context changes from certainty to uncertainty while impacting differently to the characters in the book (Fenoulhet 24). The clarity in the contextual definition highly promotes an understandability extent to the readers.

Task #11

The main character of the book is a young girl growing up in a family and ethnic group that faces insecurity from the war. The young girl is Anne Frank and as the plot progresses, she changes and matures with captions of her first time to get menses. In addition, her character evolves through such shifts of ideologies as from the sentimental emotions to the reality of the situations. As a result, she views the world from a different perspective. The other characters also change in regards to the adaptability in the new circumstances. The parents of Anne focus on the security of their children with lesser concerns for education while before moving they were more focused on the education of their children (Taylor 79). Margot, on the other hand, changes her character through her increased level of engagements in the completion of the house chores hence being more receptive. The key characters in the book change their personalities for adaptability reasons for the war.

Task #12

The thematic construct of the book lies in the consequences of war and especially between Jews and Germans. It aims at demonstrating the paramount and contemporary issues that emerge from racial discrimination. The author utilizes the life at secret annex as the significant part of the book to demonstrate on family interaction scale the effects of war and especially to the younger generations.
