The election of 1796 was an American presidential election and the only one that gave room to elect a president and vice president from opposing tickets. It took place from Friday, November 4 to Wednesday, December 7, 1796. The election came after George Washington refused a third term in office. This went along in changing how the nation eventually divided along economic, territorial, and ideological lines 4o years after the civil war.

The nullification crisis was solved when Henry clay compromised with Calhoun that slowly lowered tariffs.The compromise of 1833 was finally accepted by South Carolina, which ended the nullification crisis.
