Among the greatest system of social unfairness in the United States is the prison department. Since the era of President Nixon, the prisons have been filled by African Americans (Teti, 2017). Nixon declared a fight on drugs which was targeted to the Blacks. Additionally, tough rules and regulations were passed to curb crime during the reign of Clinton and Reagan. These policies laid down to fight against drug peddling and crimes have highly been directed to African Americans. A majority of Blacks have been arrested and jailed in the claim that they are involved in crime or drugs since they are normally viewed as aggressive in nature. Though some are innocent, they arrested and put behind bars without a proper hearing. The US has the greatest number of prisoners, which total up to three million. Among the prisoners, the largest population is made up of Blacks. Though slavery was abolished, these prisoners are exploited to work as slaves in order to earn.
Some policies which lead to mass incarceration include, war on drugs and crime. In most cases, these policies are politicized to target a certain group of people (Mauer, 2017). Over the years, many people have been arrested as a result of committing these offenses in the US. The American government endeavors to protect its citizens and believe that such policies ensure people’s safety.
Social justice is offered to all citizens in a country despite their age, gender, race, and religion. Discrimination based on race should not be tolerated at all. Whenever people feel that they are undermined, they are demotivated and become less-patriotic. They also engage in drugs and crime to prove to the rest of the dominant race that they are also strong.
