Regulating Social Media
Social media is widely used by many people, whereby people post both positive things and negative things. The conflict in terms of regulating social media is between protection from harm and freedom of speech. Democracy means that people are allowed to post anything that they want on social media. At the same time, protection from damage implies that social media should be restricted, so people do not post things that harm others. My stand on the two conflicting issues is in support of protection from harm. People being protected from damage is more important than allowing them to exercise their rights. Social media is the leading in cyberbullying, which at times leads to more harm because people end up even committing suicide; that is why it is essential to protect them. What is being posted on social media should be regulated by three different bodies. The government should lead in regulation by making sure that those who post negative things are punished. The social media platforms are also responsible for management by reporting those who post negative thoughts and making sure that they do not go viral. Lastly, each individual is also responsible for regulation by avoiding posting negative things and exercising self-discipline.
It is essential to prioritize the safety of people over their freedom. If people are not protected from harm, then there is no need to give them privilege because they will not be around to exercise freedom (Hammersley, Martyn, 2019, 225). Cyberbullying on social media is the worst kind of bullying because once it goes viral, millions of people have seen it, which causes emotional torture to an individual; that is why it is essential to protect people from harm by regulating social media. Making individuals, private companies, and government accountable for monitoring social media are outstanding because they are actively involved. The private companies are engaged by ensuring that harmful things do not go viral, individuals are responsible sine they can stop posting bad things, and the government can help reduce posting bad things by punishing offenders(Samples). Regulating social media will lead to making people practice morality because they will have to post things that are acceptable by themselves, the government, and the private companies. Regulating what is posted on social media will help reduce cyberbullying, thus protecting people from harm. Not monitoring social media will mean that people will exercise freedom of speech, even if they affect other people in the process.
The first question was about how regulation can help in achieving, allowing freedom of expression, and still protecting harmful speech. This can be achieved by requiring systems that are reported harmful content and enforcing decisions and policies about the posted data. Second, the regulations can enhance internet platform accountability by having specific requirements like publishing the standard of content posted and consulting stakeholders when making significant changes (Monika Bickert). The third is that internet companies should meet particular performance targets, such as keeping the prevalence of content violation below the accepted threshold. The last question the regulations should define the harmful content that needs to be prohibited by addressing the complexity of user prevalence. The negative effect determines the toxic substance that it has on the people who will watch or listen to it. Regulation content will not mean that people will not be posting their content; all that needs to be done is creating acceptable content. Once an adequate standard of content is given to the users, they will create the material that does not violate the rules, thus protecting people from harmful content and allowing users to create content. Prohibiting harmful content will be by reporting those who create harmful content so that they can be punished.
Content regulation is essential in protection from harmful data and information, but it violates the freedom of speech. Freedom of expression is fundamental to people because it gives hem the ability to talk about anything; they feel they want to address. Regulating that content by setting standards means that individuals will not be expressing what is in their minds; instead, they will have what they have been told according to standards set. Social media also acts as a source of entertainment for many people, and it helps them to pass the time and showcase their talents. Regulation of data will make people lose interest because they cannot listen or read what they want to because it has been regulated, which will lead to private companies losing users. Monitoring data is essential since it protects people from harm but is protected from damage more worth than letting people exercise their freedom of expression by allowing them to create any content they want?
From the above, one can conclude that it is essential to protect people from harm by regulating social media data. Social media is vital to people, especially the users, but standards should be set that needs to be followed so that harmful content is not posted.
