On the Waterfront
Elia Kazan made a film in 1954 called “On the Waterfront” after agreeing to testify and name the former associates involved with the Communist Party. He chooses Marlon Brando, who is a big star during that time for the role of Terry Malloy. Triangular structure functions on the waterfront when a romantic partner has been introduced in the life of Terry. Terry is a dynamic character because he undergoes crucial internal change throughout the story. Malloy is in a dilemma because the man who is corrupt and deserves to be punished is his friend, his brother’s friend, and boss.
Triangular structure functions on the waterfront when Malloy meets Edie Doyle and falls in love with her. Edie is a sister to Joey Doyle, the young longshoreman who has been murdered since he testified to the Waterfront Crime Commission (Ebert, 1954). Before her arrival, Johnny Friendly and Malloy have a good relationship. He enjoys getting easy jobs as a longshoreman working under Friendly since Charley, who is Friendly’s right-hand man, is his brother. In the beginning, Terry is on the side of Friendly, and he gets pats on the back, hugs and extra $50 bills. Malloy transforms eventually and decides to inform on the highly corruptible union officials. It is demonstrated that his transformation is partly brought on by his growing awareness of his love for Edie and her passion.
Malloy is a dynamic character since he goes through some severe internal changes because of a few plot developments. At the beginning of the film, he refuses to cooperate when sought out on the docks by the investigators who try to question him. He also accepts to be used to set up the death of Joey Doyle and is very loyal to Johnny and Charley who made him dive into the big fight in Madison Garden. As the film progresses, there is a shift in Malloy’s objectives and priorities. First, in his final stand on the docks, while wearing Doyle’s jacket, he looks more confident than before, with almost no nervous gestures. Second, he looks around calmly, without fear as he would do earlier. Third, he does not whine anymore; he talks rightly, and his way of chewing his gum is now cockier. Last, his burgeoning independence infiltrates his owl being. Several factors are working on his character, therefore, making him compelled to change.
Malloy is compelled to choose between two sides when things seem to be getting out of hands. One side represents the Longshoreman Local Union, who is mistreating the longshoremen. The racketeers are preying on the longshoremen making their living on the New York waterfront (Ebert, 1954). Some of the several ways through which they are mistreating them include; First, there is a harsh system of kickbacks and established usurious loans bedevilled on the dockworkers. Second, they are expected to fawn for jobs that are supposed to feed their families and urged to fight for their rights to control their destiny and their union under the American system. Last, killing the longshoremen and anyone who tries to oppose or expose them. The other side represents those who want obedience to moral authority. They want Malloy to obey moral authority by informing on the corrupt officials. The people who belong to this side are people who want justice to prevail in that community, and they include; first, Father Barry, who encourages the longshoremen to testify against the corrupt leaders. Edie has also refused to go home as requested by her father or to be intimidated by the thugs of the gang. Her steadfastness is as a result of her loyalty to her brother Joey Doyle who has been murdered by the corrupt individuals.
The two sides that Malloy is supposed to choose between are represented by two characters. Johnny Friendly represents the side of the corrupt people who are preying on the longshoremen making their living on the New York waterfront and also murdering people who oppose and expose their evil deeds. Friendly is a hardened criminal who has clown his way to the top. He is only friendly to people as long as they are supporting his bad behaviours. His obsession with power makes him act out whenever something or someone challenges his authority. He has been left morally bankrupt by his taste for power. He cannot make even a single decision that is not related to acquiring more or maintaining his control. Father Barry represents the side the people wants the moral authority to be obeyed. He administers God’s word by advocating for peaceful resistance. He encourages longshoremen to testify against the corrupt leaders.
Malloy eventually chooses one character to work with to deal with the issue of corruption. He makes the correct decision when he decides to obey the moral authority by informing on the corrupt union officials. The entire crew is happy with him, and they follow him back to work, leaving Friendly alone (Ebert, 1954). This indicates that the work crew have chosen they have chosen Malloy as their new leader. The act of following him confirms that they all wished that he would do what he did. The reason why he decides to obey the authority is that he is not happy with the misunderstood role in the death of Joey Doyle and the murders of Charlie and Dugan.
In conclusion, Edie’s refusal to go home as commanded by her father is beneficial because it is indicated that Malloy’s transformation is partly influenced by his love for Edie which can grow when they spend time together. Malloy has a tough choice to make to save the tough situation that the community is facing. He is in a dilemma because Friendly is the corrupt leader of the union . Friendly, is not only his brother’s boss but also the man who allows him to get easy jobs as a longshoreman because of his relationship with Charley. Initially, he refuses to help the investigators who look for him out on the docks. His conscience also does not allow him to have peace. His choice to tell the authorities the truth means he is putting his life at risk because there are people who have tried to expose the corrupt officials and they have been murdered. The entire work crew is proud of his bravery and honesty. His courage and perseverance have earned him respect and leadership as it is stated that the team has followed him, leaving Friendly behind as a sign that they have chosen as their new leader. People must be able to condemn corruption in society, even if the people involved are relations.
