Terrorism is an activity which violates and threatens the peace of people. Terrorists aim at creating fear for countries or people due to political or ideological reasons. Since many attacks in 2001, terrorism has been a central problem globally. The United States has been the leading nation in fighting against terrorism. Since the 18th and 19th century, terrorism has political violence has been a significant cause of terrorism where some states support bombing and assassinations. In the current century, terrorists do not make specific demands on the targeted nation hence ends up carrying out their acts without notice. Most of the terrorists nowadays are Muslims who claim that terrorism is their tradition. This paper explains an incident of Orlando shooting where a shooter killed 49 people after pledging allegiance.
One of the deadly mass shootings in the history of the United States was experienced on a Sunday at a gay night club in Orlando. One of the biggest night clubs in Orlando was holding a Latin themed event when a gunman opened fire. The gunman exchanged gunfire with a police officer who was on the watch. The gunman who was 29 years old named Omar Mateen from Fort Pierce in the past, had twice had an interview with the F.B.I.F.B.I. But was not found to be a threat to the nation (CNN Editorial Research, 2020, p. 3). The F.B.I.F.B.I. He argued that Mateen called 911 during the attack and pledged allegiance to ISIS, where he mentioned the Boston Marathon bombers. Orlando police shot and killed Mateen, but he seemed to be innocent. The suspect’s ex-wife claimed that his husband had a mental illness thus could not have committed the crime. 9n the crime scene, Mateen had an assault rifle and a pistol, which he uses in the shootings killing about 49 people and wounding almost 53 people.
People got stuck for almost three hours desperately, where they had to call friends and relatives. Police got into the building with an armed vehicle and killed Mateen. Fearing that there might be explosives planted in the building, the police evacuated around 200 people who lived near the apartment Mateen lived (Ellis, 2016, p. 5). Mateen’s parents were interviewed, where they explained that their son had been depressed after seeing two men kissing in Miami. According to Mateen’s religion, gayism was discouraged. Hence Mateen felt that they did not respect him. Although Mateen was not deeply rooted in faith, his parents believed that he did not have any connections to ISIS. Orlando police chief tried to explain that the killing was well planned.
After the initial shooting, police crowded the club as they continued communicating with some people inside the club. Some of the survivors explained to CNN how they had survived to avoid death. One of the survivors had to hide in the bathroom, having covered herself with dead bodies. Some entertainers hid in a dressing room where the shooting started but managed to escape the building by crawling out after the police removed the air conditioning unit (“Orlando nightclub shooting: How the attack unfolded,” 2016, p. 5). One of the bartenders explained that she hid under a glass bar and got out after the police came to their rescue.
After the police broke in and saved the survivors, thirty-nine people were pronounced dead while two other dead bodies were found at the parking lot. Mayor Buddy explained that eleven more people were taken to the hospital and died on arrival. One of the 49 people who were killed in the shooting included Terry DeCarlo, who was a spokesman for Florida’s L.G.B.T.QL.G.B.T.Q. Terry died on January 27th at a hospital in Hollywood at the age of 57.
Former President Barrack Obama described the event as a massive killing of dozens of innocent people. Obama urged people to stay united during the dark period since it was the first serious shooting in the United States. Obama described the shooting as an act of terror and hated where he urged all flags to be raised halfway in the act of mourning. However, the media discovered that F.B.I had interviewed Mateen twice in 2013 and 2014, but the case had been closed.
In conclusion, terrorism is one of the nationwide threats, where terrorists kill many people at once. The government should try its best to protect its citizens from terrorists. Nations should be at peace with one another to avoid international terrorism. Enough security should be maintained all over the country to prevent cases like the one in the Pulse bar. If there had been enough security officers during the event, the gunman would not have harmed a lot of people. All orders should be controlled systematically and carefully with a well-monitored entry and exit of people. The government should stop foreign terrorist fighters. The attack in Orlando was a significant blow to the United States since it was unexpected. Although the gunman did not have a terrorism history, he was shot on the spot and died. A lot of people died, leaving many in the hospital. The government should reduce access to dangerous weapons where people should be limited. Without a permit, people should not possess arms. In the case of the Orlando attack, the gunman possessed a pistol, which made it easy to kill many people. The government should cut the financing of terrorism. Terrorism requires a lot of funds; hence all governments should stay away from any terrorist activities.
