Yes; but it is like a running blaze on a plain… —a wonderful lot of handymen they must have been, too—used to build, apparently by the hundred, in a month or two, if we may believe what we read” (Conrad 51). Light shows that the river was a conduit of civilization brought by the Europeans to Africa. It was a good intention. Western civilization would have brought the many different communities in Africa together. However, the individuals who were to bring light to the dark of Africa immersed themselves in exploiting her natural resources and enslaving her people. Marlow continues by saying, “But darkness was here yesterday” (Conrad 51). This statement shows that despite the time frame taken during the occupation of the first European settlers in Africa and when he came, all that became of the good intention was void. That is, darkness depicts the greed and malice of the Belgians and exploitation and suffering of the Africans. Therefore, the good intention of bringing civilization, growth, and progress to Congolese Free State was changed due to greed for personal gains by the foreigners into the country.
Enlightenment and freedom of sexes is a key element of Western Civilization. Freedom of sexes entails a feminist view of the society in that, a man and a woman can have equity. In the Heart of Darkness, one can get the impression that women have left on the story narrated by Marlow. The female characters brought to light have had an impact on the narrator. As a foreigner, Marlow believes that masculinity is dominant in the society, but has the oriental thought that it is possible for a stalemate in the battle of sexes. It was a woman, the narrator’s aunt, who was determined to ensure that Charlie got the job of a skipper of a river steamboat. He explains, “I, Charlie Marlow, set the women to work— to get a job… It will be delightful. I am ready to do anything, anything for you. It is a glorious idea. I know the wife of a very high personage in the Administration, and also a man who has lots of influence” (Conrad 57). The narrator however came to realize that the opposite exists in Africa. There was a lot of sexual exploitation of the women to the extent of degrading them. It is difficult for male supremacy traces not to go undetected in the novel. Good intention is marred by sexual greed and personal gain here through use of women for sexual exploitation. Despite the author’s attempt at coming up with a novella, the female characters do not get the desired recognition as custodians of the society, but as elements of exploitation by the male counterparts (Saeedi 550). The intention and necessity to improve the society in Africa by Europeans end up as exploitation of the African continent, and the earth itself. Earth here symbolizes the female as it can produce. Its misuse is mostly due to selfishness and greed that comes with human nature.
A people viewed as inferior will be exploited by the ones who view themselves as superior. Africans, according to the colonizers, were inferior people. They, therefore, disguise themselves, infiltrate, and exploit the inferior persons. Disguise is an element of greed in the sense that one hides one’s intentions under cover of something else. In the Heart of Darkness, the imperialism of the white man is masked and maintained in order to be superior. The mask is maintained through Kurtz, who is the epitome of European imperialism. He is a painter, a musician, writer and promising politician. However, in Africa, he automatically gets the intention of civilization unmasked when he gets to know the wealth derived from the continent’s natural resources. Also, the mask is torn down due to usage of the native’s resources “…links the Congo and the sepulchral city, the African woman’s necklaces and the Intended’s piano keys, Kurtz’s stockpiles of tusks, and the dominoes with which the accountant “toys architecturally” (Taylor 194). Marlow explains that Kurtz has become so evil and savage beyond the savages. The savagery unmasks the guise of imperialism and shows the change of good intention due to greed, “this choice of nightmares forced upon me in the tenebrous land invaded by these mean and greedy phantoms” (Conrad 57). That is, the initial ‘good’ Kurtz who was to bring light became absorbed in imperialism to the point of losing himself as the mask was torn away to reveal greedy imperialistic intentions.

Greed can alter good intentions due to individual desire for personal gain. Conrad’s novel explains how the desire for civilization in Congo by Belgians was tuned and twisted by individuals.
