Overview of Domestic Violence
Domestic violence is a perpetual predicament that has continuously affected many people from different social classes all over the world. One continent that is affected by this difficulty is the United States of America, in which the numbers of cases reported yearly have been increasing progressively. Domestic violence is aggressive behaviour towards a partner. There are different types of domestic violence and the most common one being between intimate partners. Other domestic violence cases include child abuse and elderly abuse, respectively. In the United States, recent statistics revealed that 1 in 3 women experience some form of sexual violence, which is a shocking reality as women are considered the weaker gender in society.
Child abuse has risen to the pinnacle with slightly over 3 million referrals of cases against child abuse have been reported. The statistics also depicted that 3% to 10% of the violence is committed to the elderly yearly. There has been a myth that intimate partner violence occurs in women only which is not true as statistics show that 800,000men are subject to intimate partner violence in comparison with 2 million cases as reports of domestic violence against women yearly; these statistics reveal that domestic violence is not a mild issue but rather a severe affair that needs serious evaluation to try and find a concrete solution.
Causes of Domestic Violence
Domestic violence has been amongst us from many years back; hence this problem is timeless. For an in-depth overview and an elaborate understanding, one needs to know what first triggers this predicament from occurring. One of the factors that trigger domestic violence is the lack of good and quality high school education. Education, especially of the high school level is very crucial as upon completion of high school one can know his or her rights, what channels to use in case of attempted or being subjected to any violence. Also, one can know how to contain his emotional distress best instead of unleashing his wrath upon his intimate partner.
Children who witness family violence or they were victims of domestic violence at some point during their upbringing they might probably end up being perpetrators of domestic violence during their adulthood. Since children are very innocent and very vulnerable when they are subjected to any form of abuse, they might not speak up for fear of more severe punishment. They may also lack a mentor whom they can entrust and reveal what they are subjected to either at school or home. When these children grow up, they are mentally affected by the violence, and they may end up being aggressive to their partner since they do not know any other way to solve problems other than force.
People who do not have logical, substantial self-worth, this means they demean their self worth they may end up being abusers. These are individuals who lacked proper mentorship to mentor them on how to build their self-worth and how to deal with such cases if they occur. They may also require role models from whom they can emulate these virtues. Hence when they are in front of people or with their partners, they become easily irritated since they are sensitive and also emotionally unstable. They may, at times, resolve a problem with violence to try and earn respect from their partners.
Drug abusers can be the perpetrator of domestic violence. These are people who might have indulged in drugs and are addicts. At times men mostly use alcohol or any other medication to boost their self-esteem and gain the courage to face their wives head-on, and since at this state they are mentally unstable they may become easily irritated and beat up their partners or children ruthlessly.
Stages of Domestic Violence
When these unpleasant deeds take place, they mostly occur in a consequential manner, meaning they have stages which can be called a sequence of violence (Wilt et al. .77). They occur in three phases, namely tension building, explosive scene and tranquillity stage. At the tension building or tension pileing level, several things are incorporated within. The initial concentration of abuse is this, and some signs though considered mild, could be cause for alarm and raise red flags. At this stage, the victim may experience some insults from the perpetrator. The abuser my go to a level of pushing the victim whenever they argue. Also, coercive behaviour is typical, and one can observe from the abuser towards his or her partner. The abuser also can be demanding control of his or her partner’s possessions to try and send a message that he or she is in control.
The second stage is the atomic level, whereby the abuser now doesn’t hide his or her intentions any more. Alarming signs are visible and call for the immediate cause of action. Some of the most common events at this stage include slapping of a partner in case of disagreement. The problem can escalate to punching of a partner which will probably cause severe body injuries. The perpetrator may also inhibit movement of his or her partner. By putting a restriction on his partner’s move, he can take full charge of his partner’s life; this is because he will be able to know when the partner decides to seek help from outside and prevent this on time from happening.
The last stage is the tranquillity stage which follows immediately after the explosive scene. At this level, the perpetrator abuses his or her partner and then goes ahead to remorsefully apologize to the victim for the harm he or she has caused. It is a complicated stage since the abuser knows that the victim is either in love with him or does not have anyone turn tu for help. The abuser takes this as leverage on the victim and goes ahead to conduct his malicious act.
Effects of Domestic Violence
Domestic violence has relentless effects on the victims subjected to these outbreaks of violence and these wounds which can be both physical, mental and emotionally continue to hound them as an aftermath of the force (Dugan et al. 170-171). The victims of these unfortunate incidents develop a phobia of violence, and by looking at their wounds on the body, they can become depressed. These victims are also emotionally unstable, mostly, and they become susceptible to mild conflicts. The children who survive this violence they can isolate themselves if the perpetrator is within the school or shunning away from their friends choose instead confine themselves into a corner than facing their perpetrators. Women and men who are subject to this kind of violence have low self-esteem and are always stressed. They also may change their personality if they were introverts they drastically become more outgoing and vice versa.
Laws introduced to Curb Domestic Violence.
The United States has taken precautionary measures and instilled laws that may help to curb this predicament that is claiming the lives of many innocent lives in the United States (Monica 56-57). Violence against women act and Gun control act are some of the laws that were established by Congress to help curb this violence. The United States has also set hotlines to help victims report the perpetrators almost immediately; he or she commits the crime to help put these criminals into justice. The federal government after realizing that some of the domestic violence crimes are done by those who possess guns which they could use to harm their partners with; hence they did establish the Gun control act to prevent those who are convicts of domestic violence from possessing a gun legally.
How to deal with Domestic Violence
Many physicians have come up with numerous ways on how best to treat the victims in the most professional way to ensure minimum damage is caused to the victim. The Federal government has set up children’s homes and referrals to help inhabit the victims of domestic violence. By removing them away from the abusers and ensuring their safety, the victims will gradually develop a sense of security, and this facilitates quick recovery (Berry). The government has stipulated laws to be followed when a perpetrator is arrested to ensure he or she faces fully sentenced to the maximum this helps the victim by reducing the tremor victim had since the abuser won’t reach him. The government has subsidized therapy fee for victims of domestic violence to enable the have proper access to these therapies where they can get help to regain their self-worth, self-esteem and probably move on from this emotional distress.
How to Prevent Domestic Violence
Some of the ways to prevent domestic violence include providing economic opportunities to as many people as possible. By doing this, people will not be insolvent; they won’t be stressed about affording basic needs hence no emotional distress. It is highly encouraged for people to have mentors who act as their guardian angels and help mould their lives positively. It is also highly recommended for people to have role models with exemplary principles for them to emulate. People are also encouraged to participate in community programs that include youths and even families (Smith and Powell). Through these programs, one can meet new people, and by making new friends he or she will reduce stress and can also find a friend to share his story with who might be able to help him or her.
Conclusion
Though domestic violence may not be fatal as other forms of violent terrorist attacks, it is a vital problem that is causing many deaths in the United States. We believe that the programs put in place will help curb this ruthless predicament that is causing many people to suffer depression, and this escalates to suicidal thoughts, and later they commit suicide. We should report any form of domestic violence to help save lives in America.
