DHCP is considered as a staple of all networks and without it, the management of IP addresses would be almost impossible. (Jaakkola, 2018) Implementing windows server 2016 DCHP requires one to be fully aware of the configurations and installations of the DCHP servers including all the scopes, options, and server properties for IPv4 and IPv6 addresses. DCHP is dynamically used to assign IP addresses to client machines and because the company is to have offices in Chicago, Los Angeles, and Singapore; the installation shall require a diligent process to ensure a proper signing of the IP addresses. This is because, in large enterprises, management of IP addresses manually can at times prove to be difficult, hence the need for the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). (Panek, 2018)
For the installation of the DCHP, I would use the DC1 system; the system already had been configured with an IP address and a host into the domain service. From my part, the configuration of the DHCP server in Windows Server 2016 had included the following two major steps
- Install the DHCP Server Role in Windows Server 2016
In this phase, roles and features will be installed in the windows server 2016, to install the DHCP Server role on the server machine, open the Server Manager console and click the Add roles and features link. Click next until the Select server roles page is displayed.
Select the DHCP Server checkbox. On the Add Roles and Features Wizard dialog box, click Add Features.

Complete the installation process.
- Configure/ Authorization of DHCP Server in Windows Server 2016
After installing the DHCP server roles into the server, the next task is to configure DHCP scope and other options.
After installing the DHCP role on Windows Server 2016, the next action involves the authorization of the server in the Active Directory infrastructure, this action was necessary so that the DHCP Server could distribute IP addresses to Active Directory clients. Otherwise, if a DHCP Server is unauthorized, then the IP address distribution will stop. (Jaakkola, 2018)
In this case, installing a member server will require a manual authorization process using the GUI method.
A DHCP scope is an administrative grouping of IP addresses for a network subnet, creating the scope had involved the following steps
- Launch the DHCP console.
- From the tree on the left side of the console, expand the DHCP server’s hostname node.
- Select and then right-click IPv4.
- From the IPv4 context menu, select New Scope
The scope name would be given as LLC manufacturers and clients with a description that would help in identifying how the scope would be used on the company’s network, this description will be given as IP addresses for all desktops and laptops. Entering the IP Address range by stating the starting IP and the ending IP would create the range of the scope which would be used in assigning the clients their addresses.
DHCP tolerance would be used in the design, this would ensure that the load balance of the client requests is maintained between two DHCP servers and provides fault tolerance, for this purpose I would use DHCP failover. In this design, in case one of the servers is down, the other will keep serving the IP addresses to the clients. (Yankovskiy, 2016)
DHCP failover can be configured in any of the following two ways:
- Load balance mode (Both DHCP servers are active and the load is shared among the two).
- Hot standby mode (One of the DHCP servers is active and the other is passive. When active goes down, passive takes over and becomes active)
To be able to configure the DCHP failure into this system, I would use IPv4.
DHCP Reservations is a very useful feature of DHCP Server 2016, In essence, when there is a need for a DHCP client to “permanently” share the same IP address without having the chance to be assigned to another client, and then it is registered with it with a DHCP Reservation. Thus, when the client requests an IP address from the DHCP Server, then it will be given the same IP every time. Setting up DHCP Reservations for DHCP clients like this company would require setting a reservation from a client who has already assigned an IP address or by setting beforehand which address will be assigned to the client when it is joined into the network.
Taking into consideration the fact that at this point the company would now have an IP address from the DCHP server, I would only need to add to the reservation. The reservation feature would allow the router to reserve the lease of an IP address for use of specific devices on this network to effectively ensure that the router doesn’t assign an IP address to other devices on the same network.
IP Address Management (IPAM) is an integrated suite of tools that enables end to end planning, deploying, managing and monitoring of the company’s IP address, IPAM will, therefore, help in monitoring and managing of the IP address infrastructure by discovering IP address servers and the Domain Name System servers in this network to effectively enable the network administrators to manage from a central interface.
Windows Server 2016 can integrate both IPv4 and IPv6, however the most preferred for this type of network is the IPv6, and IPv6 shall be used because of the following reasons:
- Easy configurations, IPv6 hosts can figure themselves either by DCHP or a local router.
- Improved security, the IPv6 standards fix some of the security problems that may be experienced due to the use of IPv4 by providing better protection against address and port scans.
Even though the file system interface is general and fits a broad spectrum of applications, most distributed file system implementations are optimized for a particular class of applications
DFS technology can be used to mask the location of the content that is shared on a server.
The security of the files shared on this network will be guaranteed as the DFS allows the network administrators to alter the actual location of the content without having to change the user’s access to the user’s DFS share point. Concerning the security, the DFS SharePoint can also have a name that does not represent the actual server and the shared folder name of the original content. For those users who will be accessing the services remotely, the always-on VPN will enable remote users to securely access shared resources, intranet websites, and applications on an internal network without connecting to a VPN. ( Thereska, et al 2016)
Quota management is a valuable feature that enables users to restrict the storage capacity of shared resources in windows server 2016, creating quotas effectively limits the space allocated to a volume or folder. To set quotas in windows server 2016, I will need a feature known as the File Server Resource Manager (FSRM), this tool will assist in managing and organizing the organization’s data kept on the file servers, to this reason, I would use quotas.
Remote access is the ability to access a network remotely through a network connection. Remote access will enable users to access the systems even when they are not physically present to connect. For this connection I will apply the Remote Access Service (RAS) – RAS Gateway, installing the Direct Access and VPN (RAS) will deploy the Remote Access Service either as a single-tenant, a multi-tenant or as a Direct Access server. (Hicks, 2016)
The RAS Gateway- single tenant will deploy connections to provide users with remote access to the organization’s network and resources. The use of a VPN will serve to ensure that a persistent connection is ensured whenever remote computers are connected to the internet. RAS will also enable the creation of a site to site VPN connection between two servers at different locations, for example, creating a connection between the servers in Los Angeles and the servers in Singapore. This will enable the primary office and the branch office to use a Network Address Translation (NAT) so that users within the network can access external resources such as the internet. RAS Gateway will serve to connect the following groups of people; the Main office and the branch offices and other remote users who are not physically present within the organization.
