According to Philip, this was a miracle something supernatural which could be compared to attaining God’s glory. Philip is moved by how Le Chambon villagers we willing to risk their lives to help the Jews. He describes their acts as pure goodness amidst of unfathomable evil.
Freedom of conscience can be defined as the right for people to follow and observe their beliefs on issues concerning morality and religion. Villagers of Le Chambon give up their freedom of conscience by deciding to disregard their opinions and save the lives of the Jewish people fleeing from the Nazis. The choices were contrary to their moral beliefs, such as making false identification cards for the Jewish, which was considered to be wrong. Magda’s reaction when Edouard says to her, “I have just made a false card for monsieur levy, it is the only way to save his life,” suggests that the choice made was morally wrong, yet they had no opportunity but to disregard it. Duplication of cards was illegal, yet it was essential to ensure the safety of the Jews. Philip Hallie justifies these choices in the novel by saying, “the righteous must often pay the price for their righteousness: their ethical purity.”

Le Chambon villagers overlook the mistakes of the Jews and save their lives without considering their past faults.
