It empowers individuals or the community to improve and have control over their health (Haber, 2019). One of the activities involved in the health care plan is communication. Strategies of communication such as public announcements, use of newsletters, and mass media campaigns are used to spread awareness about healthy practices to the general public. Also, education strategies that involve training and use of support groups may be used for empowering the practices thorough increased knowledge. That said, this paper aims to discuss and to develop a health promotion plan.
The health concern that I would like to involve in my plan is tobacco smoking. Smoking is a serious public health. The use of tobacco has been attributed to diseases, disabilities, and even death. Furthermore, the use of tobacco does seriously affect society because it reduces the productivity of people, it pollutes the environment, contributes to poverty in families, and it also burdens the healthcare. The rate of disadvantages associated with the use of tobacco outweighs the benefits that come with it. That is, while considering the advantages of employment and revenue. Gentzke et al., 2019, points out that mortality rates that are associated with the use of tobacco are 80 percent higher than the people who do not smoke. The health problems that are associated with tobacco smoking are vascular illnesses such as stroke and coronary heart disease, respiratory diseases such as pneumonia, and cancer. Health promotion plan is pivotal in reducing the burdens that are associated with tobacco smoking. Through comprehensive and active awareness programs, society can be cushioned from the effects of tobacco.
The target group for this health plan is the youths. Buu et al., 2020, points out that the overall use of tobacco in American youths stands at 31.2 percent. That is the consideration of the use of e-cigarettes, hookahs, cigars, cigarettes, and vaping. Buu et al.,2020, hypotheses that the majority of these youths will die early because of smoking-related diseases. The social environment is one major factor that has been linked to causing youths to smoke. Most youths are lured into smoking after seeing people smoking in media shows and programs. Also, they are likely to smoke out of peer pressure. That is after seeing their peers using the product. Biological factors also indicate that youths are sensitive to nicotine than adults; thus, they are more likely to become dependent on nicotine. Depression, anxiety, and stress also push some of the youths into using tobacco.
The following are the approaches towards preventing and helping the youths who are the victims of smoking. The first approach is introducing community mass campaigns and programs. Campaigns are effective because they can reach a huge number of populations. The campaigns will focus on the short term effects of using tobacco, such as poor breath and being unfit. Mass media messages that encourage the change of smoking-related behaviors, habits, and consequences of smoking are effective at impacting individuals on a personal level. The messages will also show the effects of smoking through graphic descriptions and personal stories of people who have rehabilitated from smoking. Vogel et al., 2020 points out that prescriptive messages that encourage people to make better and healthier choices are more likely to influence beliefs and attitudes that encourage smoking. The messages just have to be executed in a format, emotional tone, and themes that youths can associate with.
The second approach is contributing to implementing policies and regulations that limit youths from accessing tobacco products. The approach will push for the restriction of adverts that encourage smoking. Second, this approach will seek an increase in tax for all tobacco-related products. Lastly, this approach will seek for expansion of smoking free social environments. Youths access tobacco related products in two ways. The first is commercial, and it involves buying from vendors. The second way involves borrowing from friends or stealing. The goal here is to limit the supply of cigarettes to youths.
In conclusion, health promotion plans aim to empower and encourage individuals to engage in healthy activities and behaviors. The use of tobacco-related products among youths in the United States is a health issue that needs to be addressed. I believe that the strategies that I have provided are effective in curbing the use of tobacco-related in the United States.
