Introduction
Attending college is something that people look forward to after the completion of other lower levels of education. After completing a college education, a person is granted a degree. The degree is significant for it makes it easier for people to get a job in a somewhat competitive business environment. However, there are times when going to college does not prove useful, and the reason for this is that a person might fail to understand some of the skills instilled in the learning institutions. The paper reviews the pros and cons of attending college and getting a degree, after which I will offer my stand on the matter.
The Pros
One of the benefits that come from attending college is that the person or student has a chance to get a better education. Attending college means more classes and more avenues of learning. A person can learn more about the thing he or she is passionate about and, at the same time, learn about things that are not as interesting (Caplan 16-19). Through college education, the brain can gather more information, and even though one might fail to see the importance of this at the time, it might come to assist the person later.
Another advantage that comes from having a college education is the fact that there are more job opportunities for the graduate (Caplan 21; Schneider 2). As soon as a person completes college, he starts looking for a job, and there are higher chances for him to acquire one as compared to a person without a degree. Employers are always in search of such talented people, and although they might not have the perfect skills to carry out a given task, they still get the job opportunity that a person was seeking.
Outside the home-town of a person, there are many opportunities and experiences that a person might go through. The best means through which to get this is by attending college. In college, a person gets to meet people from various backgrounds and identifies with their cultures. The experiences are significant for them to open up the mind of the individual. With a broader thinking spectrum, a person has the ability to understand the means to resolve various issues in life quickly. Moreover, meeting new people and experiencing their multiple cultures leads to a growth in respect between the various characters (Bollig 152; Hagelskamp, Carolin, & Christopher 11).
It is also essential to note that when a person goes to college, they get out of their comfort zone. Rather than relying on people or parents to always assist you like a young kid, a college attending student has some form of independence. Because of independence, they can carry out actions as they wish, and at times some of their actions are detrimental (Bollig 161). When a person goes through a stressful season in school, this serves as a learning tool. Moreover, the people can understand what they are supposed to and what they are not supposed to do later on in life.
Cons
Firstly, attending college is costly and not affordable for everyone. A lot of learners depend on very helpful student loans, but after graduating, they are required to pay back the loans, a situation where the lenders will not care whether the person has secured employment or not (Hagelskamp, Carolin, & Christopher 13-16). As a result, the person ends up borrowing from family and friends to clear the debt. There are bursaries whereby a student’s fee is catered for, but it would still be difficult for a common student to raise upkeep money.
Secondly, college is stressful. Students are just on their own, and having to follow up instructions without anyone watching can be difficult. They are responsible for how they spend their time, and wasting it brings regrets and frustration (Kennerley 648). Missing classes can be stressful as they will have to do a follow up of what others covered, which students may fail to do, leading to poor grades. Students are their managers, and they must look for professors, email them, and figure out how they will graduate. Trying to be that independent can stress them out (Bollig 165-167).
Thirdly, not all jobs require a college education. There are many jobs out there that do not need papers and are well paying. Some just require necessary skills that people could have acquired in their high school level (Kennerley 650). For instance, most IT-related jobs only require little training, and the knowledge people already can help them perform tasks, earn well, and live comfortable lives. Someone who started working immediately after high school would be far much ahead of the person who has spent almost four years in college, whereby after graduating, he will end up spending almost a year sending job applications and attending interviews.
Lastly, people do not have to go to college to be successful in life. At times, being street smart is all that matters. Having a degree does not mean a person has it all in life. There are world top billionaires who do not own a degree (Schneider 35). Some did not attend college at all. Others dropped out without graduating. Think of Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Ellen DeGeneres. They all do not own a college degree. Many top celebrities and entrepreneurs do not have any college history.
Conclusion
From the discussion above, attending college has its advantages and disadvantages, and someone would have his or her reasons for choosing to or not to attend college. In modern culture, education is termed as a human need as it enhances human status and leads everyone to propriety. Though somebody can still be successful in life without attending college, I fully support that college would be important. People do not go to college only to acquire a degree or to have a job later. Other benefits come with it, including the following: improving a person’s confidence, learning life skills, enhancing personal growth, making people wiser so that they can make their own decisions, helping the society to run smoothly, and turning people’s dreams into reality.
