INTRODUCTION
Art refers to the application or expression of human imaginations and skills in the production of pieces of words that contain them strong emotional powers. A lot of artworks have currently been seen presented in various forms, including audio and even gestures, without the traditional visual aspects. Art has, for a long time, been part and parcel of humanity. Historically, art has continuously been part of human development all through the years to date. In the general perspective, art is perceived to be a function of culture, which hence varies from one cultural setting to another (Abbing et al. 2019). As such, an inherent aspect of human life, the question of its exact roles in human life arises. What is the importance of art in human life? Why would humans carry art to this age, especially when civilization saw many aspects of life abandoned?
The use of art in human life cannot be understated. While the applications vary, it is vital to note that the role of art is almost inevitable for decent human living. While trying to understand and define the role of art in human life, medicine, as a sector, will be used. Mental health will be considered to specifically explore the role played by art in medicine, particularly in art therapy, which is part of current practices. The exploration will view many articles and research studies. The considered sources will see us outline the history and role of art in humanity (Abbing et al. 2019). Humans have demonstrated some persistence in holding onto and practicing art. It, therefore, means the current generation, too, has specific uses of art, developed from the ancient frameworks of art. Does current medical practice allow room for creativity? What are the recorded outcomes of the inclusion of art, as in art therapy? The paper here will answer these questions in the subsequent sections. In this way, the role position of art in mental health will be clearly defined, with the outcomes as recorded this far. So, what are the benefits of art therapy on mental health?
Anthropology; Overview
Looking into the history of art mostly shows an aspect of life that has come a long way in the entire course of human history (Woolf and Fisher 2015). As such, the relationship between human beings and art is one that goes far into ancient times, as earlier mentioned. With such a lasting relationship, there is certainly a reason as to why humanity is closely related to art in the same manner. Art must hence be having a significant role in the life and times of human beings. Human beings are fast-evolving, especially in their perceptions and practices. As time goes by, humanity has indicated sincere intentions to adopt a more comfortable and more convenient ways of life. In the process, human beings have hence been seen to drop many practices while adopting more current practices. A lot of times, the newly adopted methods are primarily more convenient and useful for human living.
Psychology; Overview
The science of the mind and human behaviour is referred to as human psychology. The coverage of psychology goes further to cover various other aspects of human life. The scope of Psychology is hence a broad one. In addition to being extensive in scope, psychology as an area of study holds immense importance to humanity. The understanding of psychology is the basis on which the knowledge of human behaviour is understood. Art, which is a function of human behaviour, is also closely related to psychology.
Additionally, the application of art in mental health cannot hence leave behind psychology. Besides the close association between psychology and literature, it is also part and parcel of mental health. As such, the consideration of art in mental health must also consider the various aspects of psychology.
MENTAL BENEFITS OF ART THERAPY
From the introduction and history, art is a universal tool. As such, people can primarily relate to some form of art and even more. The primary reason as to why people are drawn to art is for purposes of entertainment. While many other reasons exist for the use and consumption of art-content, the delight and relaxation of the mind is the chief function of art. A lot of persons, in the best state of their health and well-being, still find art important for their health of the mind. The role of art in keeping the mind relaxed, happy, and entertained is the reason art gained its way to the world of therapy (Aithal et al. 2019). Art did not merely introduce better treatment approaches for the care given to patients with mental illnesses. Silently, art was able to do away with the inadequate strategies of treating mental health issues, which were previously used, such as physical violence. Over time, evidence has emerged, supporting the effectiveness of art in therapy.
In modern practices of medicine, therapists employ art in their care plans for their patients. The use of art in therapy has gone further to adopt the new forms of art as they emerge. The success rates associated with these pieces of art can be linked to the liking that people have for art. A lot of people these days use art massively, not just as talent, but even for commercial purposes. In this manner, people are continually seeking to be updated on the progress of the art industry. As such, the adoption of various aspects and pieces of art by physicians works better for mental health victims. Art has currently seen more applications in human life than earlier times (Holmwood 2015). The mental relaxation due to the consumption of the art content improves their mental recovery, besides pulling their minds to the normal life circumstances as dictated by society. Many studies have proved that the inclusion of suitable forms of art in the care plan for mental illness patients improves their recovery sped, as well as the chances of recovery. Art therapy is hence such an essential aspect of treating mental illnesses.
The concept of art therapy dates quite a while far back. It is evident that even in the medical practice by the father of medicine, Hippocrates, art was an essential aspect of medical practice. Besides the method, Hippocrates would urge practitioners to maintain art (Butler et al. 2009). The art here referred to the ideal practice of medicine, in which patients were served. Art, as at the time, and even now, related to the service offered by a practitioner to the patients. Up to this date, the glorification of the art of medicine lives. The Hippocratic Oath contains phrases that seek to encourage doctors to practice and keep the art. Art was hence, according to Hippocrates, such a significant concept in the practice of medicine. Indeed it is, even in current times and practice.
An example of the current application of art therapy as part of keeping the service is an art in the form of paintings. A study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of art in the way of painting, on male children with Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). A lot of these children are in their elementary school ages (Heynen et al. 2017). As mentioned earlier, art therapy is not limited by age or even gender. In this study, paintings were used with boys who qualified for the survey through the evaluation criteria. All the boys taking part in the study were diagnosed with Oppositional Defiant Disorder. At this stage, the patients were keenly evaluated to prevent the admission of children with Conduct Disorder into the study. While the two conditions are closely related, Conduct Disorder has more aggression towards human beings and animals, unlike Oppositional Defiant Disorder.
At the end of the 12 sessions of paintings, the participants in the study showed significant adaptive behaviour and emotions. Their relations with people was hence greatly improved courtesy of the paining therapy, a form of art therapy (Levy et al. 2018). The outcome at this moment mentioned is proof of the current application of art in the bettering of the lives of humans. Mostly are the persons that are living with mental conditions such as the participants in the study. Besides improving on their symptomatology, the subjects were noticed to share their feelings more openly than before. The subjects were hence more submissive to authorities than before.
The intolerance and open defiance, which was their key symptoms, were hence improved. With an additional improvement in their communication, the participating male children showed that art therapy had a significant role in improving the symptoms of children suffering from Oppositional Defiance Disorder. From the improvement noted from this study, suggestions were made to enhance the counseling sessions of such children further, especially after the painting art therapy had greatly improved their symptoms.
The application of art therapy was further tried in helping violent adolescents to improve their conduct. In this case, martial arts, a performed art, was employed among violent adolescents as part of helping them to improve their violent behaviour (Huss et al. 2010). The group for young people who mainly showed this challenge ere the fatherless children, gangs well as the out-of-control city students. They particularly pose a critical challenge to psychotherapists who attend to them (Moore et al. 2019). Martial arts, from this study, were found to inculcate a level of discipline among these young people. The resulting discipline was the turning point for this group of people whose adolescence may easily mislead into reckless violence, especially in environments that they are not guided and appropriately controlled.
By engaging young people in martial arts, their discipline improved significantly. Martial arts requires that an individual first instills in the self-discipline. The first level of regulation is critical in helping them to formulate and focus on their goals in the art (Meek 2012). The ability to develop personal discipline is the initial pointer to the fact that the victims can develop the discipline toward every other aspect of life. Besides the advantage of physical fitness, martial arts enhance a great deal of improvement in a person’s general character. The discipline skills have been identified as the most significant effects of martial arts, even though there exist many other benefits, including physical fitness and protective skills for self-defense.
Being a form of art with strict rules, a person who can successfully remain in the art can henceforth develop the discipline required to live with other referrers of the society in peace without having to offend them now and then. Art has once more proven its effectiveness in handling the challenges revolving around a character such as violence. Martial arts instills an innate code of conduct that helps eliminate the violence portrayed by young violent adolescents.
The other aspect of art therapy is drama therapy, which refers to the application of the therapeutic elements of drama and theatre in giving therapeutic services. The action methods used in drama therapy have been shown to facilitate creativity, learning, growth, imagination, and insight. With these developments, an individual would hence improve in terms of their mental functions, especially the cognitive aspects, which is primarily affected by the benefits of drama therapy (Miller 2020). The performances made in drama therapy have a learning effect on learners. A key aspect is the realization that repetition is a requirement if one needs to improve clients (Khadar et al. 2013). In this way, the participants have been shown to gain critical social skills, which are generally crucial in forming their mental health strengths.
The practice of drama therapy has a role in therapeutic interventions for various mental illnesses. Museums are part of the drama therapy approach in improving the experiences of people with mental disorders.
Women with a history of abuse and trauma have also been shown to benefit realty from art therapy. A lot of the women in this category have bad experiences in their minds. The memories of these experiences always disturb their mental state, causing them to live with the fears of the traumas they have seen before, as well as the abuse events they witnessed. A lot of these women have turned to addiction as their next resort, as they attempt to deal with their scary histories. Art therapy has, however, shown a level of effectiveness in addressing the needs of women with traumatic experiences as well as abusive experiences.
The use of puppets has shown excellent outcomes in improving the counseling outcomes of children. The improvements reported in this case were realized when creatures were employed as part of narrative therapy (Musicka-Williams 2018). Narrative therapy is a model of treatment that aims at separating a patient from their problems. With this type of treatment, the persons undertaking the counseling sessions are encouraged and guided along the paths of getting to employ their skills in minimizing their challenges. As such, the approach makes the victims more self-reliant in terms of handling their problems, which is an excellent outcome, especially for people who, at the start, had the challenge of managing their difficulties.
Dance therapy is the other form of art therapy that has proven essential, particularly in palliative care of patients. Patients undergoing palliative care are a specialized group of patients whose care needs to involve a lot of comforting. Studies have revealed the fact that dance moves as part of psychotherapy can help the patients in palliative care units to integrate themselves. The group of patients in this scenario has the particular challenge of feeling detached from life and even from their selves (Poulos et al. 2018). Dance moves, according to a study conducted in the UK, helps patients in the palliative care centers to collect themselves up emotionally and feel like part of themselves and the larger society surrounding them. The environments that these patients need to feel part of are quite a number. They include their families, as well as the people they interact with in the form of their caretakers. The patients hence develop an embodiment of themselves, which they then express, as an ultimate impact of their recovery from the disintegration they commonly feel.
Hypersexual individuals have also reported the benefits of art therapy. The individuals with this condition have an obsessive or compulsive sexual behaviour. Shame affects these people significantly. The shame is also as the central factor of compulsive behaviour. In a study in which more males than females were found to have this condition, females were shown to have a greater shame in admitting the occurrence of the state (Wilson and Fischer 2018. The impact of this denial is the fact that they possibly reported for interventions at advanced levels of the behavior. Shame was hence shown to be an impediment to treatment-seeking by the victims. Through drawing, as art therapy, the effects of shame were significantly reduced among the victims. With better confidence, the victims were noted to have been more ready for a counseling session than before the involvement of the drawing therapy.
Patients with hysteria have not been left out. An exploration of the 18th-century approaches to the treatment of hysteria demonstrates this. In previous times, hysteria was treated using significantly violent strategies. The method was informed by the need to punish the victims for their irritating gestures during the episodes. Most notably, however, the medical personnel at the time consider the opinions the opinions of literary women. In this manner, art was incorporated as part of therapy for hysteria. Earlier than this, the medical personnel had employed strange ways of treating hysteria, especially among women. The women victims of hysteria were slapped and sometimes beaten up as part of treating them. During that particular time in history, hysteria was considered an actual disease, likened to psychosis (Meek 2012). With the inclusion of the literary women, and as such, art, the treatment of the women with hysteria was much improved. The moderation and reluctance of the physicians at the time were slowly overtaken by the new approaches, which were relatively more effective in treating hysteria. Over time, art has mostly been incorporated into the practice of hysteria treatment, with better outcomes reported from many trials and situations. The 18th-century methods of treating hysteria changed a lot, with the voice and suggestions from the literary women, whose opinions were heard and considered.
Art therapy spans across many conditions as a therapeutic intervention. The treatment of hysteria in the18th century, it was determined that the early forms of treatment of the disease relied on art therapy (Reiser 2012). Narrative therapy was notably reported to have been essential in the improvement of the hysteria. The effects on the victims with which the study was done. A review of many other related articles revealed the same findings sat the 18th-century studies and practices. Art therapy can hence realty improve the outcomes of the management of hysteria in affected patients.
Studies performed on a patient the anxiety, especially women, revealed the vital role that tarts play in the reduction of anxiety level. Art therapy was shown to improve the stress regulation among women by themselves. Women, who are mainly at a relatively higher risk of developing anxiety disorder were shown through studies to benefit from art therapy, in various forms substantially. The art strategies manifested by lowering the level of anxiety in the women already having fears related to this condition (Moore et al. 2019). Art therapy, accordingly, therefore, induced some level of comfort in the women victims of anxiety, which helped them to overcome their fears. As such, the women used this strategy to progressively overcome their anxiety states, entering into better and more relaxed and calm rules of living.
Creative therapy has been used as an interventional measure in the therapeutic response to dementia. Dance moves, drama, as well as music were evaluated to determine their effects on dementia. By exposing patients to these creative activities and items, observations were made, assessing their various mental functions, including cognition, memory, and communication, among others. By the end of each of the studies, the participants exposed to the art therapy in the form of music, drama, as well as drama and dance moves reported enormous improvements. The communication capabilities of the patients were reportedly improved by great extents, courtesy of art therapy.
The use of psychomotor therapy and art therapy is an excellent way to enhance therapeutic alliance in the management of patients needing these various care interventions. Ultimately, the alliance works better for the patients, with repotted better outcomes, further reaffirming the significant role of art therapy in mental health interventions. The practice of art therapy has not just proven effective within the hospital of facility settings. Elderly persons living at their homes under home-based care have reported significant improvement when exposed to art therapy, besides the other therapeutic interventions (Rylatt 2012). With the exposure of these elderly persons to musical items of their interest, dance moves, and various other forms of drama performances, the elderly patients were reportedly symptomatically improved and ore jovial and elated in moods. Some of these art approaches have even proven effective in parenting individuals who are facing various stressful situations. The stressors could be related to parenting or not. The baseline, however, is the fact that art therapy relieves the individual of their stressful situations.
The effectiveness of art therapy has hence been proven through various situations under which it has been tried through approved ethical studies. The inclusion of art therapy into patient management is therefore profitable primarily to the patient and the attending personnel. In war set-ups, art therapy has also been tested to determine its effectiveness in improving the feelings and precise state of the people involved in the war or those that are affected by the war. War comes with several effects on persons involved directly in the war.
The possibility of suffering physical bodily harm is immense. The people at the war sites, especially the social workers assigned various roles therein, undergo a lot of stressful events in the course of their duties (Twemlow et al. 2017). A lot of times, these stressful moments negatively impact their lives, even after the service therein is finished. Studies, however, revealed that the people serving in such stressful environments could effectively employ various forms of art to improve their emotional and mental states. Art therapy, through this, once again proves to be effective in helping people walk through multiple stressful situations in their lives.
CONCLUSION
Art therapy has significant impacts on health, particularly the mental health aspect. The application of art therapy has significantly transformed the mental health sector, improving it in various aspects. Artworks have been seen to impact significantly on the emotional and mental states of multiple groups of people. The use thereof in mental health is progressively increasing. As an inherent part of humanity from ancient history, art remains key even in modern living (Wilson and Fischer 2018).
The role of art in medicine has begun long ago and has grown. Art has indeed established a critical niche. The development of the use of art has gone through several stages, but ultimately, art has improved the outcome of mental healthcare services. By the use of paintings, literature, and performed arts has taken a center-stage in mental health management. With interest in performed arts growing, the role of this form of art consequently increases, especially in the realm of mental healthcare. Undeniably, many clients in some for the psychological care facilities are consumers of the art content. Going forward, more of the mental healthcare planning may have to include some of the forms of art, as part of further improving the state of care delivery in mental health.
