Introduction

Undoubtedly, the internet and modern technology have transformed modern life, especially the way healthcare services are facilitated. Consequently, technology has led to the emergency of telehealth services and tools that help people to manage their care and get the services they need irrespective of their geographical locations. According to Nagel, Pomerleau, and Penner (2013), telehealth entails the use of technology to communicate and facilitate healthcare care services over the internet. Thus, patients and healthcare providers share digital information to complete the processes of diagnosing, treating, and managing various healthcare conditions. Notably, telehealth has increased the utilization of doctors and other medical professionals while minimizing healthcare barriers in remote areas (Rutledge et al., 2017). Often, computers and smartphones are used as common devices in facilitating telehealth services; thus, allowing patients and healthcare providers to work at their comfort at home. Some of the noticeable scenarios where telehealth has been proved successful involve using of mobile phones or other digital devices to upload blood sugar levels, medications, doses, and food logs for review by a healthcare provider who responds over the internet, using of online portals for patients to see test results, request prescriptions and make appointments, and getting notifications through emails and texts on when to make next visits, and when examination is needed (Taylor et al., 2015). In short, telehealth is associated with multiple benefits as it allows patients and healthcare providers to save time and consultation and transport costs. Finally, congestion in healthcare facilities is reduced considerably, and remote areas realize increased access to healthcare services.

The article provides fundamental knowledge and basics about telehealth essential for people who want to learn its background information. I utilized PubMed database using keywords “telehealth” and “technology in healthcare” to check for the source. Acquiring telehealth knowledge from the article is crucial in delivering better care quality services to patients. Besides, the article highlights that the utilization of telehealth services creates a strong connection between patients and healthcare providers as well as between nurses and other healthcare providers. Therefore, telehealth stakeholders should perceive it as a technology of greater benefit and less disruption and not a technology that will trigger a financial burden on them. Telehealth technology is a breakthrough towards transforming patients’ quality of life and the nursing profession. Notably, if telehealth technology will be utilized and embraced accordingly in alignment with nursing theories, the compounded benefits are numerous both to the patients and healthcare providers. Additionally, I selected this article because I come from rural areas, and most patients have been hugely impacted by long distance traveling and sometimes poor road networks; thus, limiting them from accessing healthcare services. Telehealth technology can be the quickest way to break barriers to healthcare access within rural areas. Therefore, marginalized areas will have the opportunity to receive equal and quality care services.

I chose this article from the Google Scholar database, and I found it relevant and interesting to the topic I selected of “Telehealth” technology in nursing. The article is important for medical schools and students who have a desire to be equipped with telehealth knowledge. Currently, the use of telehealth technology among various healthcare facilities is escalating; thus, nurses should receive adequate training on the importance and the need to implement telehealth technology. According to Rutledge et al. (2017), telehealth knowledge and content should be incorporated into the nursing education program as a strategy to prepare future nurses on ways to embrace telehealth technology in practice. Consequently, Rutledge et al. (2017) indicate that most medical institutions have taken a significant step of introducing telehealth programs to help learners understand and appreciate the importance of telehealth technology in clinical practice. However, most medical institutions have faced daunting challenges while infusing telehealth technology program such as inadequate or lack of resources to facilitate telehealth training in medical institutions. Besides, there are limited number of trained personel to teach students and promote telehealth competence among learners. Therefore, these shortcomings require the medical institution stakeholders to take appropriate measures to ensure availability of more qualified personel and resources to promote telehealth training in medical institutions. Finally, governments should play an active role of allocating resources, particularly in medical schools to promote telehealth training.

The article provides outstanding importance of telehealth services in community nursing and the factors that affect telehealth adoption and frontline acceptance of the technology. According to Taylor et al. (2015), telehealth has commanded healthcare access in a larger geographical area including rural and urban areas. As a result, communities can access physicians, nurses and doctors of higher ranks at ease and at relatively lower costs. Therefore, telehealth has increased efficiency in service delivery at community level. Additionally, the combined importance of telehealth technology is likely to improve service delivery in healthcare facilities even more compared to the previous years. However, understanding the importance of telehealth technology is a crucial factor towards accepting its use in clinical practice among frontline healthcare workers.

Its benefits to patients and frontline healthcare workers has commanded the need to introduce training and introduction of education programs in healthcare facilities to promote its utilization in the healthcare system. Technology in healthcare system has become a breakthrough to improved care services and has reduced healthcare access barriers while promoting quality and equal access to care services among marginalized communities. Thus, the adoption of telehealth technology is a significant milestone in the modern healthcare system. Nurses should understand and learn how to implement the technology in clinical practice to help patients at home and make quick diagnosis of various healthcare conditions including chronic conditions such as diabetes. Notably, patients should not be reluctant in embracing telehealth technology but give it a priority as a way to improve their healthcare conditions and well-being.
