Analysis of Food Security

Introduction

Food security is the capability of all people to get access to ample, wholesome, and safe food, both physically and economically. It also means that people can meet their nutritional requirements and live healthy lifestyles. The efforts seem to bear no fruits as many Kenyans, especially in the Northeastern Region, continue to succumb to hunger (Will). Failure of rains to fall and an increased rate of corruption in this country has also contributed to Food Insecurity. To curb this problem, the government should implement new agricultural methods, which could be beneficial when the country is experiencing rain shortages. Promoting local farmers by availing storage facilities and boosting them financially through giving of subsidies could also be of help. There should also be stricter measures concerning the issue of corruption.

Background

Food insecurity is the inability of people in a country to access sufficient and nutritious food. A recent study by (United Nations Population Division) explains that the about 13% of the world’s population is suffering from hunger and have to live without access to food. There has been a rampant decrease in the production of food in developing countries. The reduction in output leads to an increase in the prices of purchasing food. Global warming and growth in the production of biofuels are also affecting the agricultural sectors of the developing countries. The production rate of agriculture in most African countries has been decreasing over the years (Peter).

The population of the world is increasing daily. In the coming years, the earth may not have the capacity to provide food for all these people. Increased food production contributes to population growth as people become more fertile. However, as this increase is experienced, resources will be strained; hence population decrease will be experienced. This is not the case in Africa as the population continues to grow despite the decline in food production. The main factor contributing to population growth in Africa is the lack of awareness of the importance of family planning (Peter). Availing a variety of contraceptives could assist in reducing the birth rate. Controlling the rate of population growth is a crucial tool in ensuring food security, especially in a developing country.

The current population growth in most African countries is alarming (Will) the increase in population is day by day, nearing the eclipse point. This is the point where the capacity of the earth feeding its inhabitants will be exceeded. Without enough food to sustain humanity, the population will turn on each other, and chaos will ensue, many people will die as the strain on the resources will increase. For the earth to avoid reaching the eclipse point, humanity must come up with ways that will ensure the population growth is controlled. Countries like china should be emulated for their one-child policy, which allows every family only to have a single child.

New Technology

In a report by the United Nations The United Nations in 2015, came up with sustainable development goals. Among this goal was the elimination of world hunger (United Nations Population Division). They have since then tried to attain this goal through the results that have not been of significant impact. Today’s world is faced with many disasters that hurt agriculture. There have been floods, droughts, and famine. For the world to be hunger-free, critical stakeholders like the United Nations should come up with new technologies and policies to ensure that this hunger issue is solved once and for all. The problem of hunger has affected the world for long, but it’s now time to step up and face it.

New technology should be adopted to help farmers in developing countries. Some of the new policies to be implemented can be the investment in new technology, which will ensure farmers can get information that may help them to reduce the risks associated with natural disasters. With this information available to farmers in rural areas, the production will improve (Von Braun). The improvement will be as a result of the new technology that makes farming easy and effective.

In countries like Egypt and Ethiopia, there is a service that sends weather updates to the farmers through SMS(Will). New technology will be helpful to farmers and herders in rural areas as they will be able to access to prices, organize transport as well as ensure secure funds transfer. Mobile banking is also helpful as it allows farmers to obtain loans to finance their agricultural projects. Access to new technology is always likened to the eradication of hunger as the farmers are assisted by this technology to make better farming decisions. Even though access to technology doesn’t eradicate the hunger itself. The technology will help farmers in developing countries to avoid risks that may lead to the destruction of plants (Huho et al. 64).

Factors causing food insecurity in Kenya

Kenya, as a country, has been able to produce sufficient maize grains in the past three years; despite this, they have been importing other grains like wheat and rice. The country is said to have been feeding its population from the arid and semi-arid areas. This country has been facing various challenges in the agricultural industry and many other food production sectors (United States Population Division).

The climatic conditions in Kenya and the African continent, in general, have been changing for the worst. This was seen in the many famines that have been hitting the country left to right and the Centre. Many floods destroy the crops in the farms and carry away the topsoil, which is nutritious and needed for the plants to be healthy (Von Braun).

Heavy rains and floods have been causing soil erosion in the farms. In 2019 there were heavy rains that caused flooding in most parts of the country. The rise in many industries in the country has led to an increase in Greenhouse gas emissions, which have affected the ozone layer. With the ozone layer being changed, the plants will dry up, and therefore no harvests will be available for farmers in the country (Will). Many people have bought vehicles in the country; this also contributes to the climatic conditions in the country.

Conclusion

Many measures can be taken by the country to reduce food insecurity. Adoption of irrigation to many arid and semi-arid areas will reduce food insecurity as this will see an increase in food production. Food reserves should be increased to include different types of foods, not only maize. Implementing and investing in new technology is an excellent way to go. The country should engage in large scale farming to increase food production. This measure, if implemented, will lead to an increase in food production in this country.
