Health Administration
Using the Health IT.govs Benefits of EHRs web page, pick one of the benefits of health IT for
you and your family considering the customers of health care facilities (e.g. producing
paperwork, getting information into the hands of people who need it, helping doctors with
coordination of care and safety, reducing on necessary testing, or providing direct access to
health records). Choose two of the standard terminologies discussed in Chapter 22 of your
textbook that you feel are most important to leaders governing the adoption of an EHR. In your
initial posting to your classmates, discuss how the adoption of these standards supports
achieving the specific Health IT benefit that you chose. In your follow-up posts to classmates
examine the differences between the standards that you researched and those discussed by
other classmates in different Ashford majors of study.
Health and Human Services
Using the Health IT.govs Benefits of EHRs web page, pick one of the benefits of health IT for
you and your family considering the clients of health and human services organizations who
maintain electronic client records (e.g. Producing paperwork, getting information into the hands
of people who need it, helping doctors with coordination of care and safety, reducing on
necessary testing or providing direct access to health records). Choose two of the
multidisciplinary standard terminologies related to health IT discussed in Chapter 22 of your
textbook. In your initial posting to your classmates, discuss how the adoption of these standards

Health Promotion
Using the Health IT.govs Benefits of EHRs web page, pick one of the benefits of health IT for
you and your family considering the potential impact of Health IT on the populations health (e.g.
producing paperwork, getting information into the hands of people who need it, helping doctors
with coordination of care and safety, reducing on necessary testing or providing direct access to
health records). Choose two of the multidisciplinary standard terminologies related to health IT
discussed in Chapter 22 of your textbook. In your initial posting to your classmates, discuss how
the adoption of these standards supports the health IT benefit that you chose. In your follow-up
posts to classmates examine the differences between the standards that you researched and
those discussed by other classmates in different Ashford majors of study.
Quizzes: How can you improve your score?
Read the textbook thoroughly in order to understand the material. You cannot just skim over
the content.
Make notes of what you read try inexpensive index/note cards or outlines, whatever study
techniques work best for you
Give yourself TIME to read the materials and re-read in study mode
Access the website and review the student review questions.
Have food with you when you take the test. Mints, fruit, etc. are good things to help you stay
focused.
Week 4 Case Studies
For your case study, here are some key points to remember:
1) There are case studies at the end of chapters 21, 24, 25 & 27. You need to complete two
case studies.
2) Submit one file with both case studies.
3) Each case study response should be 3-4 double spaced pages each.
4) In addition to the textbook, utilize a minimum of two scholarly sources per study to support
your points
5) Your focus should be the response to the case study questions. Do not repeat the case study
scenario nor define terms. Develop your response to the case study.
6) You need to read the textbook to grasp the key concepts before you respond to the case
study. Read every line of the case study; your response needs to focus on the case study
questions.
Week 4 Assignment
Patient Identity Management Assignment: I strongly encourage you to read the required articles
this week. Dont confuse patient identification with Patient identity management- they are not the
same topic.
The assignment is to create a policy regarding the identity of patients records within information
systems environments and include the following:
Policy title
Version Number
Effective Date
Date Ratified
Ratified By
Introduction (Rationale for the policy)
Definition
Policy
General Guidelines
Do not tell me what a policy is but rather create the policy. How do you write a policy? There are
many examples of templates online that can help guide you.
Chapter Readings
Chapter 21: Improving the User Experience for Health Information Technology
The user experience is important both for users being able to do their job successfully
and with little to no error, as well as for technology adoption
User experience is a combination of ergonomics, human factors and usability
As an informatics professional, usability is something you will evaluate with every
project that you work on. Figure 21.3 on page 355 is a great visual of the value
that usability provides downstream
Understanding what usability means, its importance to the overall success of
health technology implementation and methods used to evaluate it is important
Chapter 22: Informatics-Related Standards and Standard-Setting Organizations
A standard set of guidelines that all organizations must follow is key to interoperability
and being able to share patient information, not just internally but with outside
organizations
This includes standards in clinical terms as well as codes for billing and
application integration
Table 22.1 on page 372 is a good overview of several organizations that are responsible
for developing these standards
Chapter 24: Patient Safety and Quality Initiatives in Health Informatics
It is proven that health technology can help improve patient safety and overall quality of
care
Over the last several years there have been several initiatives and programs
implemented by regulatory bodies that require the use of health information technology
in organizations
The table 24.1 that starts on page 410 is a good representation of these
Remember how in chapter 22 we learned about data standards
In this chapter you will learn how these are used to meet some of these
measures
Table 24.2 on page 412 is a good visual
Chapter 25: Legal Issues, Federal Regulations and Accreditation
Healthcare is highly regulated business
With the introduction of health technology and EHRs being aware of certain laws and
how the EHR can be used to abuse them is important
Specifically the Stark Law and Federal Anti-Kickback Statute
Accuracy of what is being documented in the EHR is important when it comes to
downstream billing and regulatory requirements, including Joint Commission
Accreditation
Chapter 26: Privacy and Security
This chapter will address laws around protecting patient health information and the
importance of its security
Including requirements should a breach occur
WIth the use of EHRs and health technology devices it is important that we maintain
patient privacy and security through risk assessments and security checks
A hint for your discussion post, some of the security risksvulnerabilities can be found on
page 448
Chapter 27: The Health Information Technology for Education and Clinical Health Act,
Meaningful Use, and Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015
These regulatory laws are important to understand as they have specific requirements of
EHRs, specific to how and what clinicians document and communicate
If requirements are not met, the EHR is not certified which can lead to penalties
Figure 27.1 on page 457 is a good overall visual summary of the goals of these
regulations and how they interact with one another
Table 27.2 starting on page 462 is a good overview of the objectives for Meaningful Use
and the requirements for documentation in the EHR
In cases where these are not met, it could lead to penalty or denied payment or
eligibility from Payors
Chapter 28: Health Policy and Health Informatics
This chapter will cover how and by whom health policy is created and the drive for the
need for health policies in the health information technology space
While this will help to guide you in creating your policy for your assignment this week, be
sure to read the supplemental articles specific to patient identity management
