Work Environment Assessment
Work Environment Assessment
Work environment assessment is important as it allows someone to observe and understand more about their work environment. Organizations aim always to ensure that the structures in place always focus on providing a productive and conducive environment. In nursing practice, the workplace environment is an integral part that dictates the healthcare system’s quality. One of the major determinants of a conducive working environment is civility. Nurses have a maiden responsibility of portraying civility in the workplace as it helps to promote teamwork that results in an improvement in the quality of healthcare (Marshall & Broome, 2021).
Results of my Working Environment Assessment.
The Clark Healthy Workplace Inventory’s workplace assessment score was eighty out of the possible one hundred scores, which indicated a moderately positive workplace environment. A score of between 80 and 90 indicates a moderately healthy workplace (Clark, 2015). Examples of the top-rated attributes from my assessment were unity, transparency, employee satisfaction, and morale. The attributes that had a lower score included; sufficient opportunities for career development and promotion and shared vision. The analysis of positive attributes seem to be on a personal level, whereas the negative attributes mostly are at the organizational level.
Example of my Workplace Incivility Experience
Workplace incivility is a common challenge in the health sector. Incivility actions in the workplace include; sending nasty notes to workers, gossiping, workers being disrespected through comments, behaviors, or gestures. Sometimes we tend to overlook such experiences because we assume it is normal, but in the real sense, it is a critical issue that affects efficiency at the workplace. I have experienced such incidences in my workplace in the past. I vividly remember an instance of incivility that we were predisposed to where the nurse in charge used to reprimand us publicly and even going ahead to insulting us. The nurse in charge used to be very bossy, and anything that was not pleasant to her could cause a nightmare at the workplace. I was once late to the place of work, and before she could even consult to know the reasons behind my lateness, she was all over accusing me of being undisciplined and incompetent. The nurse was unkind to other healthcare providers, and to us, which culminated in an inter-professional dispute at the workplace.
The incivility experience was demoralizing. It reached a point where we could not be able to tolerate the behavior. Initially, it led to a ripple effect; we began to gossip and having a cold war by skipping her meetings. Eventually, the work performance was getting poor. We reached a point where we saw that the two wrongs were not making a right, and therefore we organized for nurses’ meeting to discuss the matter. An independent person was chairing the meeting, and the aim was to restore teamwork. Teamwork is critical in promote effectiveness in the workplace (Dahlke et al., 2018). In the meeting, we raised all the concerns from both sides. We eventually agreed to compromise both ends and make a resolution that will promote cohesion and teamwork among ourselves. The second meeting was an inter-professional one where we discussed conflicting issues and made a resolution of always working in coordination and respecting each other scope of duty. Notably, Inter-professional coordination promotes the quality of healthcare (Reeves et al., 2017). The resolutions were fruitful, and moving forward, the workplace environment became more conducive, and productivity improved significantly.
Workplace environmental assessment is very critical in determining the well-being of a place of work. The assessment was a good opener; it was crucial in pointing out things that need to be improved and appreciate the ones that are doing pretty well. Clark Healthy Workplace Inventory tool is indeed an important tool that helps in quality improvement in a workplace by pointing out the strengths and weakness in the workplace, and therefore, it will be prudent for organizations as well as workers to embrace the use of it in an effort towards improving the quality of healthcare.
